Department Mission
The primary responsibility of the Department of World Languages, Literatures, & Cultures has always been to support the teaching mission of this University by serving the needs of students. Specifically, the Department offers quality instruction that enables students (1) to understand, read, write, and speak the language they have chosen to study; (2) to gain, through the use of these language skills, a knowledge of the countries, regions, and peoples where that language is spoken; and (3) to develop an understanding of cultures and history of such regions. In addition, the Department provides training for teachers of world languages at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Department Vision
Enhancing the quality of undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, & Cultures will eventually lead to an even more accomplished student body in the College of Arts & Sciences and the University. The Department of World Languages, Literatures, & Cultures will contribute to the advancement of the College's and the University's international outreach and reputation by maintaining opportunitites for international exchange and study abroad programs. The Department of World Languages, Literatures, & Cultures will promote and foster an academic culture in which student learning and scholarly and artistic achievement by faculty are viewed as mutually enabling activities that are recognized as an important contribution to the vision of the College of Arts & Sciences and the University.
